Chasma Australe

A large canyon, Chasma Australe, cutting through the south polar layered deposits of Mars as seen by the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter. Perspective view, looking toward the south pole along the 90o East meridian. The canyon is about 70km across at its widest point; there is about 3.5km of vertical relief in this scene.
